Who we are

NNSG started in 1998 as an outgrowth of community partnership training sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). That training, entitled "Community-based Partnerships and Ecosystems for a Healthy Environment," emphasized building individual and community capacity for sustainable resources and economies

The founders of NNSG embraced the principles of that training and established NNSG to "work to build trust among diverse citizenry to ensure sustainable resource use." The organization's approach to land management issues is science-based, but values-driven in order to achieve solutions that can be supported by both resource users and land managmenet agencies.

Members are diverse: ranchers, conservationists, miners, professors and teachers, outdoor recreation enthusiasts, federal and state agency personnel, elected officials, business owners, retirees, young and old--anyone with an interest in Nevada's lifestyles, landscapes and culture.

Our volunteer organization is funded by grants, private and corporate donations, membership dues and funds from the BLM and U.S. Forest Service.

Members are contacted through e-mail, hard mail, and the organization's web page. The nine-member board meets at 5:15pm on the first Thursday of each month at the USDA-NRCS office: 555 W. Silver St in Elko. The public is welcome to attend.

What we do

Monthly meetings focus on natural resource science topics, relationship building and Pod reports. Each year NNSG sponsors ecosystem workshops/symposia and ranch and rangeland tours.

NNSG members worked collaboratively over four years to produce the Elko County Sagebrush Ecosystem Conservation Strategy that focused on sage grouse. Species, habitats and human needs were considered together.
